Used To vs. Used To

Recently I have come across a grammar point that has really been troubling my students. "Used to" vs. "Used to". Confusing? Yes because that is probably how you are hearing it in your head. However it is not really like that. Let me explain..... How do I explain the difference between "I'm used to" and "I used to"? "I'm used to" is used to talk about something that you have become accustomed to or that is familiar to you. For example, "I'm used to waking up early in the morning." or " When Sofía first moved to England, she wasn’t used to driving on the left, and she nearly had an accident." "I used to" is used to talk about something that you did regularly in the past but no longer do. We began our very verby journey last week, but we didn't finish. There is so much to learn. Let's continue learning all about verbs now. 1. Transitive vs. Intransitive Verbs The distinction between transitive and intransitive verbs lies in whether the verb requires a direct object to complete its meaning. Transitive Verbs: A transitive verb requires a direct object to complete its meaning. The action of the verb is performed on the direct object. Example: "She reads the book." ( Here, "reads" is the transitive verb and "the book" is the direct object receiving the action.) Intransitive Verbs: An intransitive verb does not require a direct object. The action of the verb is complete by itself or is followed by an adverb or prepositional phrase. Example: "He sleeps." ( Here, "sleeps" is the intransitive verb and there is no direct object.)
