The WISE OWL

Teaching tip for when your lesson plans aren't working.

The WISE OWL strategy is a problem-solving framework that guides individuals through thoughtful analysis and decision-making. The acronym typically stands for the following steps:

  1. WWhat is the problem?
    • Clearly define the problem you're facing. Understanding the root of the issue is essential before trying to solve it.
  2. IIdentify potential solutions.
    • Brainstorm possible ways to address the problem. Consider various options, including both conventional and creative approaches.
  3. SSelect the best option.
    • Evaluate the potential solutions. Weigh the pros and cons of each, considering factors like feasibility, time, cost, and potential impact.
  4. EExecute the plan.
    • Once you have selected the best course of action, implement it. Ensure you have the necessary resources and a clear action plan.
  5. OObserve results.
    • Monitor the outcome of the decision. Are things improving? Is the problem being solved? Adjustments might be necessary based on what you observe.
  6. WLearn from the experience.
    • Reflect on what went well and what could be improved for future situations. This reflection strengthens problem-solving skills for next time.

This structured approach can help individuals and teams address challenges efficiently while minimizing impulsive decisions.
