What are "Sentence Connectors"?

Sentence connectors (Sometimes called Conjunctive Adverbs) are words or phrases that are used to link ideas, paragraphs, or sentences together in a coherent and cohesive way. They help to show the relationship between different parts of the text and improve the flow and readability of the writing. Examples of sentence connectors include: however, therefore, in addition, on the other hand, and furthermore.


A semicolon is used to connect independent clauses.

  1. I like to hike; however, I prefer to bike instead.
  2. She studied for hours; consequently, she aced the exam.
  3. They wanted to go to the beach; nevertheless, it was raining all day.


A period is used to connected related sentences.

  1. I love warm weather. However, I always make sure to wear sunscreen.
  2. She studies hard for her exams. Consequently, she always gets good grades.
  3. He wanted to go out with his friends. Nevertheless, he chose to stay home and study.
